Leadership is based on trust and respect, in this photo, the gladiators don't follow him because he has power. They follow him because they respect and trust him. They collectively know that to have a greater chance of survival they must follow his leadership. They must accomplish the task of survival using their strengths collectively. Maximus as a leader shows charisma and leadership qualities because he was a loyal general to the Roman emperor. This experience gave Maximus the qualities to go the distance as a gladiator.
